Since 1922, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Incorporated was sought after from many interested females throughout the Indianapolis area. However, because many of the young ladies expressing interest were not students at Butler University they were unable to become members of the organization. Noticing the trend of interest, two sorors, Soror Nelleye Matthews and Soror Rosemary Carpenter decided to form a chapter that would incorporate all the colleges located in the Indianapolis Metro Area.
The Gamma Zeta chapter “GZ” was chartered on April 6, 1963 at Indiana University Purdue University-Indianapolis (IUPUI) by 4 magnificent women: Sorors Myrtle Bryant, Barbara Pervine, Doris Ferguson and Mary Smith. As a chapter that encompasses 4 universities in the greater Indianapolis community, Gamma Zeta has had to deal with a lot of pressure of engaging with other campuses and Greek life not being as prominent all the campuses in our charter. Regardless, GZ has always strived to keep the Sigma Torch shining bright on the campus and to always make sure that IUPUI, Marian University, Martin University, and University of Indianapolis knows what Sigma Gamma Rho is about and that we are here to stay. Since the last reactivation on December 19, 1998 with the induction of Soror Catina Harris, the chapter has never lost sight of the sorority’s “Greater Service, Greater Progress” slogan.
